Serrated straight edge! Any good?

I don't really do much rendering at all but have heard about serrated straight edges being the bees knees and showing up low spots.

Do you guys lay on, use normal straight edge fill hollows then use serrated edge, float it or just lay on, use serrated and fill hollows float it?

Might sound like stupid question but can't really find much information about them on the web.
